Dutch Language Exam Requirements for Expats in 2025
If you're an expat in Amsterdam aiming for permanent residency or Dutch citizenship, it's crucial to stay informed about the latest language exam requirements. Here is a run down of everything you need to know if you are beginning the Dutch inburgering process in 2025.
Current Language Level Requirement: A2
As of 2025, expats voluntarily integrating (not under a formal integration obligation) are still required to pass the civic integration exam at A2 level. This includes individuals on work visas or those seeking naturalization. However, it's important to note that the Dutch government has plans to raise this requirement to B1 level, though the exact date for this change hasn't been finalized.
Recommended Deadline for completion: Before July 1, 2025
Given the potential policy changes and the current political climate, it's advisable to complete your integration exams before July 1, 2025. Doing so may help you avoid being subject to the anticipated B1 requirement.
Changes to the Speaking Exam Format
Starting March 1, 2025, the format of the Dutch civic integration speaking exam has changed in the following 3 ways:
The multiple-choice section has been removed.
The exam now consists solely of spoken questions.
The number of exercises has been reduced from 24 to 16.
This new format is designed to focus entirely on assessing your speaking abilities in practical situations.
